In the day and age where Footballers are getting bad press for their extravagant wage demands, recently the DJ rich list has been doing the rounds, which exposes the apparent net worth as well as last year’s earnings.
Dutch DJ Tiësto has been named as the richest figure in dance music in a new survey by Forbes. According to the US business magazine, the 43-year-old Tijs Michiel Verwest earned $22m (£14m) last year.
That is a considerable way from second place Skrillex who has burst on the scene in the last 18 months who pulled in $15m (£9.7m) last year and the trio of Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello aka the Swedish House Mafia came in third with $14m (£9m).
The surprise entrant at #7 was DJ Pauly D from the US reality TV show, Jersey Shore raking in $11m (£7.1m) last year.
As people are becoming more aware of the Dance Music scene, the demand to see such acts has grown considerably. According to Forbes, most of the acts on the list make the bulk of their money from touring as the magazines estimates include earnings from live shows. Some artists can take home more than $100,000 (£64,200) for a nights work and reports claim that on average, Tiësto makes $250,000 (£160,500) per DJ slot.

However the net worth of the DJs is slightly different. From a list on celebritynetworth.com Dutch DJ Tiësto once again tops the list as the worlds richest DJ.
Tiësto has a net worth of $60 million (£37.5 million), according to Urb magazine, has a clear £10 million advantage over English record producer and Trance DJ Paul Oakenfold with Paul Van Dyk close behind in 3rd.

Interestingly some of the math doesn’t add up. For example DJ Pauly D isn’t in the top 30 despite last year’s earnings of $11m (£7.1m), Afrojacks net worth and earns each tell a different story but the surprise in the list is the Swedish House Mafia who only have $4m each despite being one of the most in demand Dance acts over the last couple of years.
A lot of DJs have various endorsements which boost their funds as well as having their own clothing brands, record labels and endorsing various products such as headphones and other DJ equipment.
With DJs taking home more money than some premier leagues footballers, maybe in the age of computers and ever increasingly sophisticated methods of DJ and producing, we will see a surge in young talent wanting to be the next Avicii, Porter Robinson or Madeon rather than the next Wayne Rooney.
