Strummer of love 17/18/19 August in aid of Strummerville

How to remember Joe Strummer? It’s a question being asked around the world, as the 10th anniversary of the singer’s untimely death approaches. To his legion of devoted fans, the leader of the Clash was a rebel genius – the John Lennon of his generation, according to his front-page obituary in The Independent. His sloganeering lyrics, fuelled by anger, idealism and the call for justice and unity, empowered the social consciences of countless thousands. But the woman he knew as “Luce” remembers a very different character to the public image of punk’s poet hurtling down the Westway of life.
Joe loved equality, community, global awareness and more importantly people. This festival is being put together to celebrate the life of this man, the legacy he left behind and to remind us all how important it is, in this ever increasing age of commercialism and capitalism, to get on with what you believe in even if it means doing everything yourself.

Many of the great bands playing at the festival, some global superstars, others homegrown rising legends, began in much the same way as Joe did: having a passionate need to communicate to the world through music with nothing but a message and a few chords to get things rolling all with that great DIY ethic that is at the core of this celebration.

This one off event will take place in an area of outstanding... natural beauty in the Blackdown Hills in Somerset, close to where Joe spent the last years of his life.

Acts for the Festival include:

The Pogues
Badly Drawn Boy
Frank Turner
Roots Manuva
Basement Jaxx (DJ set)
Billy Bragg
KT Tunstall
Alabama 3
and Reverend and the Makers to name but a few.

Strummer of Love have been honoured with so many fantastic bands coming to play for them and all the proceeds will directly come back to the charity and help Strummerville continue their work.

Also alongside all the amazing music there is a whole cornucopia of exciting areas including an exhibition of Joe's archive, the Mutate Britain artists, a wonderful kids area and a beautiful healing circle and arts and crafts.

There will be two main stages, one outdoor and one inside a huge marquee. Bunting and flags will be flying all round the festival site. All bars will be reasonably priced and where possible all food outlets will use ethically sourced ingredients.
For the kids we will have an area dedicated to them, with activities to amuse them when their not on your shoulders listening to your favourite bands (ear protection will be available on site)
We will also have a healing field, a communal eating area, lots of space to camp and a patrolled car park, over looking the beautiful site.
Topping all of this off will be Joe’s favourite meeting place - a constantly burning camp fire.
